News / Driver flown to Aberdeen after crash
THE DRIVER of a car involved in a collision with a tractor near Sullom Voe oil terminal on Friday evening is recovering in hospital in Aberdeen.
Two women had to be cut free from the car, which also was carrying a two year old and a 20 year old man when the accident happened just after 5pm at the junction into Sella Ness.
All the car’s occupants were taken to hospital by ambulance, but the driver was flown to Aberdeen by air ambulance on Saturday morning.
The others were released with minor injuries, while the tractor driver escaped unscathed.
Police said they are still investigating what happened on the busy road, where concerns have been raised about road safety with the volume and speed of traffic.
Hundreds of vehicles are travelling backwards and forwards every day with the construction of the Total gas plant and the refurbishment of the Sullom Voe oil terminal.
A police spokeswoman said the road was partially closed for two hours after the crash, when one lane was re-opened.
She said the accident was still under investigation and a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
This story was amended after speaking to witnesses to the crash on Monday afternoon.
