News / Forty months in jail for stabbing
A YOUNG Shetland man with a history of offending was jailed for three years and four months after he admitted stabbing and seriously injuring a man during an early morning doorstep confrontation.
Earlier this month Lerwick Sheriff Court heard how 23 year old Scott Anderson, whose address was given as Aberdeen prison, had gone to the man’s front door in Lerwick’s Pitt Lane at 5.30am on 16 January this year to resolve what was thought to be a drugs dispute (Frightened man face prison for stabbing; SN 2/5/13).
Anderson had armed himself with a knife fearing a violent argument after he had been repeatedly threatened the previous day.
After the fight, the victim called the police to say he had been stabbed and was taken to hospital with life threatening wounds and a punctured lung, where he remained for two weeks.
Appearing from custody for sentencing on Wednesday, defence agent Tommy Allan said that although Anderson had a lengthy criminal record, this was his first crime of violence and it had only taken place following “considerable provocation”.
He added that his client had difficulty coping with life outside of prison and would be helped by being placed under supervision following his release.
Jailing Anderson, Sheriff Philip Mann said he was persuaded that due to the background of drink and drugs in this case that there could be a serious risk to the public following his sentence and ordered a one year supervised release order.
The sheriff added: “There was no need for you whatsoever to go to the victim’s address armed with a knife and seek him out for any purpose.”
