News / Two cases of norovirus

TWO OF the patients suffering from diarrhea and vomiting in Ward One of Lerwick’s  Gilbert Bain Hospital have been infected by norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug.

The ward has been closed to new admissions for a week now, but NHS Shetland said on Monday that they were “making decisions about individual admissions in order to manage the beds and ensure the safety of patients.”

The situation is being reviewed on a daily basis by the health board’s outbreak control team.

A statement issued on Monday afternoon said the outbreak was “still under control”.

“Visiting to Ward One continues to be restricted, and anyone who was intending to visit the ward should phone first on 01595 743035 before coming to the hospital.”

The rest of the hospital is not affected by these precautions.
