News / Screenwriters workshop

TWO top screenwriters involved in adapting crime writer Ann Cleeves’ thrillers for television will be sharing their skills later this month.

Gaby Chiappe and Richard Davidson visit Shetland in May to research the upcoming Shetland crime series based on Cleeves books featuring Fair Isle detective Jimmy Perez, which was commissioned after the huge success of the pilot programmes in March.

While here the pair will lead a practical workshop at Mareel entitled Not as good as the book, about adapting novels for the screen.

Participants will be encouraged to do some structuring and writing themselves, and there will be analysis and discussion of existing screen writing.

Chiappe has 15 years experience as a screenwriter, her recent work including episodes of Survivors, Lark Rise to Candleford, The Paradise and Vera for TV.

Davidson is an award-winning playwright, who has written more than 60 episodes for Eastenders.

Chiappe has been charged with adapting Cleeves’ first Shetland murder mystery Raven Black for TV, while Davidson will be transforming Blue Lightning for the small screen.

Shetland Arts literature development officer Donald Anderson said: “This is a great opportunity for anybody who is interested in developing their writing for screen to take part in what promises to be a fascinating and helpful workshop, led by two vastly experienced screen writers.”

The workshop takes place in Mareel’s Green Room on 21 May from 7 to 9pm.

Places on the workshop cost £5 and can be booked via Shetland Box Office in Mareel and at Islesburgh, over the phone on 01595 745 555 or online here.

Places are limited, so prompt booking is highly recommended
