HOUSEHOLDERS, businesses and organisations are being reminded to switch off their lights on Saturday evening for an hour to highlight climate change.

Earth Hour is an international event organised by the wildlife charity World Wide Fund for Nature which has millions of people on the planet taking part.

Shetland Islands Council is backing the campaign. Environment and transport committee chairman Allan Wishart said: “The support from Shetland demonstrates that climate change and reducing carbon is something folk take very seriously.”

WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said: “Shetland Islands Council’s decision to join WWF’s Earth Hour highlights their commitment to this issue.

“We hope lots of individuals, community groups and local organisations feel inspired to take part too.” More on Earth Hour in Scotland can be found here
