News / Blaze destroys family home
A Burra family had a lucky escape on Saturday morning when a fire destroyed their home in Hamnavoe.
It is understood that the family was alerted to the blaze by a passing van driver who saw smoke coming from the building.
Emergency services were called out at around 6.15am, and appliances from Scalloway, Lerwick and Sandwick rushed to the scene.
Fire fighters used three main jets and eight sets of breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze, which was eventually brought under control at just after 9am.
Fire crews spent most of the day at the scene to dampen down the completely destroyed family home.
A spokesman said the blaze had started in the outbuilding and quickly spread to the main house.
