Global warming at standstill

In the past when the UK Met Office trotted out its dire warnings of runaway global warming, the forecasts were issued on the eve of the annual Climate Change Summit which is held in a different exotic location each time, this year in Qatar,  attended by tens of thousands of delegates and activists at tax-payers’ expense.

If you can’t remember what the summit is about think “Copenhagen” and Gordon Brown announcing “we have 50 days to save the world.” A thousand or so days on, one of the leading drum-beaters in the man-made global warming frenzy, the UK Met Office, has been forced to concede that despite ever-increasing carbon dioxide levels – man-made or natural – global warming has decelerated to a standstill.

Yes, following repeated failures of their “record temperatures next year” forecasts, the Met Office has issued a new, less lurid forecast, “no further temperature increases expected in the next five years” and funnily enough, this one didn’t come out before the Climate Summit, it was issued on Christmas Eve when all the news people were on holiday and no one was interested anyway.

Why wasn’t this forecast issued at the usual time, four weeks earlier, in time for the Qatar summit? You may well ask, I know climb-downs are embarrassing however it seems odd timing for such an important announcement?

Interestingly, IF this forecast turns out to be accurate, that would be two decades of global temperature standstill while carbon dioxide levels – from man-made and natural sources – have continued to rise.

Perhaps those of “the faithful” who have disparaged sceptical climate scientists as “deniers” will now turn their fire towards the heresy of the Met Office and its cohorts at the Hadley Centre and the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU) who provide the temperature data?

Of course, on past performance if the Met Office says “no warming” maybe we should expect cooling?
