News / Just skidding

A YOUNG Shetland engineer narrowly avoided losing his driving licence and his job after he admitted performing a deliberate 180 degree skid at a junction in Lerwick last year.

Eighteen year old Frankie Sandison, of 5a Kantersted Road, Lerwick, was spotted by police as he sped through the Grantfield area of the town on 25 October.

The officers on patrol at 11.15pm followed him and watched as he skidded his car on the wet surface in a complete about turn at the Holmsgarth Road junction at the ferry terminal.

Sheriff Philip Mann restricted the number of penalty points he awarded Sandison to five after hearing that any more would mean he would lose his licence as a new driver.

Also fining him £400 for careless driving, Mann said: “Had it not been the fact that your employment would be in jeopardy I would have imposed a period of disqualification….but I am of the view the loss of your employment as a consequence of this offence would be disproportionate.”
