Letters / Scots deserve EU referendum
Who should decide whether an independent Scotland should be in the EU or not?
It is not the EU; it is not the SNP; it is the voters of Scotland.
I was a member of the SNP for almost 30 years. An SNP slogan, dressed up, as a policy was Independence in Europe.
However there was a further policy which said that on independence, voters in Scotland would get a referendum on membership of the EU. I was comfortable with this second policy, if not the first.
Many SNP members still think the referendum on membership of the EU policy is in place. It is not. The SNP quietly dropped that policy.
When I asked about this I was told that if I did not like it then I should leave the party, which I did.
Why is getting out of a union of 62 million where our five million voices are seldom heard a good idea but at the same time wanting our five million voices to disappear in a union of 503 million?
Voters in Scotland should be asked whether they want to be in the EU or not.
