News / Fines after weekend assaults

TWO men working on oil contracts in Shetland were fined a total of £1,400 following a series of assaults during the weekend.

Appearing from custody before Lerwick Sheriff Court Dafydd Wyn Jones pled guilty to a total of seven charges.

Co-accused Benjamin Martin Mahone admitted two charges of assault and breach of the peace, all committed in Lerwick on Saturday night.

While at Capt Flint’s, 37 year old Jones assaulted a man in the pub, pushed him onto a chair and pinned him down. He also assaulted a woman by striking her on the face to her injury.

Jones, of 7 Gordon Terrace, Bangor, Wales, also admitted assaulting a man in the nearby Harbour Chip Shop, and repeatedly punching another man on his head at the Thule Bar, later the same night.

Meanwhile, 27 year old Mahone, of 1 Highfield, Cleatormoor, in Cumbria, pled guilty to assaulting a man in the Harbour Chip Shop.

Both also admitted three counts of breach of the peace.

Sheriff Philip Mann fined Jones £1,000 for his part in the crime spree, while Mahone got away with a £400 fine.
