Letters / Where are the missing pups?
On 17 November I sailed by Grif Skerry on the east side of Whalsay.
There were 18 grey seal pups on the island, eight of them still in their creamy white baby coats.
On Saturday, exactly two weeks later, I was at Grif Skerry again. This time there was just one pup.
Odd, that.
On the basis of previous years’ seal pup surveys, I’d have expected half a dozen pups still there, at least. Numbers were normal at other sites nearby.
I wonder where the missing pups have gone. I hope nothing has happened to them.
