SHETLAND’S new cinema and music venue is gearing up for its official opening weekend later this month, with celebrations taking place at venues in and outside Lerwick.

Shetland meets Appalachia will see US fiddle giant Bruce Molsky team up with special Shetland guests for three concerts in Muckle Roe (15 Nov), Cullivoe (16 Nov) and Mareel (17 Nov).

Local musicians joining Molsky on stage will be Hom Bru, Haltadans, Fullsceilidh Spelemannslag, Gary Peterson, Maurice Henderson, Maggie Adamson and Brian Nicholson, the Cullivoe Fiddlers, the Heritage Fiddlers, Lynda Anderson, Ryan Cooper, Freda Leask, Peter Wood, and Sheila Henderson.

Scottish indie sensation Aberfeldy will take the stage at 8pm on Friday 16 November, followed by one of Scotland’s best known performers, Dougie Maclean, at 7.30pm on Sunday 18 November.

Other treats include live music all day in Mareel’s café/bar from midday on Saturday 17 November, with an opening celebration and speeches starting at 6pm.

Marketing officer Lisa Ward said: “The events planned sum up what Mareel is all about – showcasing excellent talent from Shetland and beyond, as well as emphasising Mareel’s links with venues around the isles.

“The official opening weekend is about celebrating with everyone, so we urge anyone interested to pop in and join us in marking the moment.”

Tickets for the events are available from Mareel, Islesburgh, Shetland Box Office on 01595 745 555, and online at www.shetlandboxoffice.org and www.mareel.org.
