Letters / Not my initiative
With regard to the new ‘non-islander’ fare being proposed for the Fair Isle ferry service, I would like to point out that this is not my individual initiative (Remote communities feel targeted by cuts; SN 29/10/12).
This proposal came out of direct consultation with the islanders and in this respect they are to be congratulated for the suggestions they put forward to trim costs on what is already a fairly minimal service.
If the ‘non-islander’ fare is accepted along with other initiatives the hope is that increased revenue will offset the cost of and retain the fortnightly summer sailings to Lerwick.

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.
Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.
Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has over 600 supporters who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.
