News / NorthLink ferry fares increase

PASSENGER and freight fares at Serco NorthLink Ferries will be increased by 2.8 per cent as of January, as previously agreed with the Scottish government.

The news comes as the lifeline ferry operator has opened bookings for its sailings in 2013.

The company has also confirmed that the number of Pentland Firth sailings will be reduced from three to two per day during the off peak period as o 1 January.

The Hamnavoe will however make three return sailings on certain days during the off-peak period to cater for local events and national holidays.

Managing director Stuart Garrett said: “We understand the importance of ferry services to the communities of Orkney and Shetland and will continue to engage with our customers to ensure that we deliver an excellent service to passengers.

“We’ve spoken to the local communities and carefully monitored the demand for services across the year and we believe the new off peak service will fully meet demand for sailings.

“The NorthLink routes will now be more efficient, allowing us to invest in improvements while delivering a service that’s affordable to the Scottish government.”
