News / Quayside conversation
SHETLAND fishermen will get a chance to address the Scottish government directly in December about their concerns for the industry.
On Friday Marine Scotland announced a 17 date tour of the country’s fishing ports where senior officials will take part in a “quayside conversation” with fishermen.
Fishing secretary Richard Lochhead will attempt to attend as many of the sessions as he can, as he does with the farmers recently.
A Marine Scotland spokeswoman said that while there were regular meetings with industry spokesmen, this was an opportunity for local fishermen as industry bodies to have their say.
“Richard Lochhead has been doing this with farmers at kitchen table events around the country, and it gives a chance for individuals to have their voices heard,” she said.
“We want to know how our policies are affecting them and what people would like to see done better.”
Marine Scotland’s head of sea fisheries Mike Palmer added: “I am very aware that the policies we develop can have a serious impact on the livelihoods of skippers and I am determined we get these decisions right.”
The Shetland event takes place in Lerwick on 6 December, with the time and venue yet to be confirmed.
The tour starts on 25 October and ends next April.
