News / Region-wide drugs raids net isles folk
A NUMBER of Shetland people have been caught up in a week-long drugs operation by police in the highlands and islands, which has seized illegal substances valued at £12,000.
Northern Constabulary said among the 44 people to be reported to the procurator fiscal as a result of the intelligence led raids, some came from Lerwick including one who is being charged with supply.
More detailed figures were not yet available as this was an area-wide operation, a police spokesman said.
Forty three properties were searched as part of Operation Ram, with heroin, cocaine, cannabis and amphetamine all being found.
In addition to the drugs, more than £3,000 in cash was seized and two small cannabis cultivations were discovered.
Detective chief inspector Mark Mackay said: “This operation is a culmination of intelligence gathering by our officers and demonstrates our commitment to reduce the availability of controlled drugs and disrupt the ability of dealers to operate in our communities.
“Our activity does not end here as we will continue to pursue those involved in drug trafficking and organised crime utilising all assets at our disposal to detect and report those involved.
“We are appreciative of the assistance received from the public and information provided contributes significantly to our investigations such as Operation Ram.
“I would urge people to continue to support our efforts and contact us if they have any information about drug dealers and organised criminals.”
