Letters / Survey on national identity
My name is Euan Smith, I am from Bankfoot, which is a small village in Perthshire. I am currently studying for a Bsc in Geography at Dundee University, with the aim to peruse a career in environmental and human development planning.
I have always had an interest in the people of Scotland, in particular the people living in the remoter parts of the country.
After studying political geography for my third year, I began to wonder how strongly people living out with the centre of Scotland view themselves in relation to national identity, which I found particularly interesting because of the upcoming independence referendum.
The purpose of my study is to discover the different identities held by people living in the northern isles, and explore how globalisation has impacted on the local culture of the islands.
The project is also aimed at discovering whether the current level of governance followed by the islands is reflective of the desires of the local community, but is again linked in with the overall theme of identity.
Any information people provide through the survey is completely anonymous, and will be used to form statistical information in relation to interview data I have already gathered from a trip to Shetland and Orkney during the summer.
The survey is open to anyone who is aged 18+ years, and will only take around three minutes to complete. I am looking for as many responses as possible so please encourage family and friends to complete the survey.
