Letters / ‘You’ve been Trumped’ highly relevant to Shetland
I congratulate Shetland Arts for including Anthony Baxter’s “controversial” film You’ve been Trumped in this year’s Screenplay.
It concerns Donald Trump’s “Dunes of Scotland” golf course at Menie, north of Aberdeen, and is documentary filming at its very best, impartial and non-sentimental.
The director’s contrasting the dignity and helplessness of the Menie residents with the ruthlessness of the Trump machinery (aided and abetted by the SNP government) is superb and very moving.
This film is highly relevant to Shetland regarding the proposed Viking Energy wind farm, as there are numerous parallels: lack of proper consultation, ridiculous claims of environmental mitigation and scant, if any, regard for those affected by the development.
Seeing the environmental destruction is heart-breaking. It is on a tiny scale compared to what VE is planning for Shetland’s central mainland, but a nightmare vision of what might come our way.
This documentary is an eye opener, and I urge everybody – supporters and opponents alike – to go and see it.
It is shown at Mareel tomorrow, Sunday 9 September on Screen1 at 2pm.
