News / Drivers banned

A CARE professional who was chased by police for more than 10 miles on Shetland’s main A970 road between Gulberwick and Channerwick in May has been fined £1,000 and disqualified for two years.

Martin Francis Fraser, of Aesha, Levenwick was also told to carry out 170 hours of unpaid work as well as to resit an extended driving test.

Fraser had previously pled guilty to driving dangerously and at excessive speed, driving while unfit to do so through drink or drugs, as well as failing to provide a blood sample at Lerwick police station, on 19 May this year.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that the 37 year old had been going through a difficult spell earlier this year.

Sentencing Fraser, sheriff Philipp Mann told Fraser that he could easily send him to jail, even as a first offender.

In another drink driving case, 48 year old Mark John Evans of Montfield, Lerwick was disqualified for three years, ordered to carry out 70 hours of unpaid work and also fined £300.

Evans had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood when stopped by police on the A970 at the Black Hill on 27 June. It is Evans second drink driving conviction.
