News / Shortlist for top SIC job
SHETLAND Islands Council will begin the task of replacing its interim chief executive Alistair Buchan next week.
A shortlist is currently being drawn up from the 29 applicants for the post to lead Scotland’s northernmost local authority out of the financial doldrums.
Buchan was drafted in following the public inquiry into the SIC by local government watchdog The Accounts Commission in 2010, after high profile fallouts within the council and the departure of its then chief Dave Clark.
Buchan led a major restructuring exercise, famously describing it as “trying to turn around a supertanker”, which has led to a major savings exercise and the loss of 230 staff.
He returns to his previous post heading Orkney Islands Council on 4 October.
A panel of nine councillors led by leader Gary Robinson will view the shortlist of candidates on Tuesday prior to arranging interviews. It is understood there are candidates from within and outwith Shetland.
The successful candidate will be the third chief executive at the council in three and a half years.
