News / Gotland hosts games
THE SWEDISH island of Gotland has been awarded the 2017 Island Games, for the second time in the history of the event.
The decision was taken during a preview visit to Bermuda, the host of the 2013 games.
International Island Games Association chairman Jorgen Pettersson said: “Gotland is an island well known for its passion for sport. They have the knowledge and enthusiasm as well as the venues and accommodation to deliver great games.”
Bo Frykenstam, chairman of the Gotland 2017 Bid Committee, added: “What a feeling to bring the games home to Gotland once again! It means a lot for the sports on Gotland and indeed for the whole of Gotland to host this multi-sport event in 2017.”
The Baltic island first hosted the games in 1999.
