News / Local planning is best
SHETLAND Islands Council’s planning department is the best performing in Scotland, according to head of planning, Iain MacDiarmid.
He told a meeting of the authority’s planning committee on Tuesday that during the first quarter of 2012, the department had approved 111 of 113 applications under delegated authority.
This was the best record in Scotland, he said.
He added that the department’s approach was “to iron out” any potential problems between developers and objectors as part of the approval process.
Only where this strategy proved to be unsuccessful would planning applications then go before the committee for decision.
