News / Quarff grass fire
A LERWICK fire crew were called out to extinguish a grass fire that started when a small bonfire got out of control on Sunday afternoon.
Observers reported passing cars having to drive through thick clouds of smoke after strong northerly winds took hold of a burning pile of scrap wood at a house north of Quarff.
The fire brigade sent out a single appliance at 5.30pm and the crew used a hose reel jet and beaters to put out the blaze, which burned 260 square metres of grass and heather. A fence was also damaged.
