Letters / Stop the madness

Many years ago when this Viking Energy stupidity was first mooted I knew it would be wrong for Shetland. Over the next while various letters, now deep within the SN archive, were penned arguing the case against the wind farm on a whole range of issues

One of the major concerns, which has now been quite plainly verified by all responsible environmental bodies, was the profound damage to Shetland’s wonderful peatlands. I recall stating that the wind farm would tear the heart out of Shetland natural heritage.

However, I have followed all the correspondence since the dark day of  4/4 (refers to 4 April when Scottish government granted consent) and find the social fabric of Shetland being split apart. . A house divided. Now I fear the wind mills are tearing the heart out of Shetland’s soul.

I hear people wanting to leave, tourists not wanting to visit, people frightened about the real health issues, people deeply concerned about being buried alive amid windtower pylons. There is such an eclectic mix of real and deep emotions from anger to disappointment that it is about time the Viking Energy cabal and any remaining responsible trust members should put an immediate halt to these awful plans.

What is Viking Energy going to do? Force the wind farm to be erected next to people’s houses against their will, force these windtowers up against all the sound environmental advice, force these monstrosities up despite all the well documented health issues, force resolutions through the trust in inquorate meetings and ‘clever’ political stunts?  Quite ridiculous. Contemptible. I even worry that their misplaced belief in their own refulgence will make them attempt to overcome these inane courses of action.

It beggars belief that they seem completely blind to the damage that is going to ensue. And all for what – some very implausible financial returns which would just fall apart anyway once the subsidies are withdrawn; as a result of the growing disquiet at Westminster over the national wind farm proliferation?

I appeal to VE and its associated disorganised rabble of weak-kneed supporters with all their cockalorum to open their eyes and stop this madness.
