News / Walls pier back on track

THE WALLS Pier project is back on track shortly after local firm Franks L Johnston (Shetland) Ltd won the contract to complete the works.

Building the new £2.5 million pier in Walls came to a sudden halt at the end of last year when the contract with Inverness-based Airport Civil Engineering was wound up due to “resourcing difficulties”.

On Wednesday, the council’s manager for the capital programme, Robert Sinclair, said the new contractor will be on site later this month.

“We’ve been very encouraged by the keen interest in the remaining works, and this has resulted in a winning bid that’s in line with the project budget.

“The majority of materials are already on site, and I’m confident that the project will soon be back on track,” he said.

The company’s managing director Frank Johnston added: “With work on the new Fetlar breakwater and pier well advanced, I’m looking forward to continuing to work with the council at Walls.”
