News / First runner
THE FIRST “runner” for Shetland Arts’ 2012 Cultural Olympiad project has been chosen to drive a multi-coloured van full of movies from Wales to Northern Ireland.
A Hansel of Film is an unorthodox contribution involving people throughout the UK submitting short home-made films to Shetland Arts and runners delivering those films to cinemas throughout the country in a loop from Shetland to Southampton and back again.
The first runner announced on Monday is “gypsy wagon artist” Rory Coxhill who will transport films from the Ucheldre community arts centre in Anglesey to the Belfast Film Festival in his brightly painted van.
Coxhill’s van has been painted in the Pakistani Truck Art style will fellow artist Haider Ali specifically for the Cultural Olympiad. The pair spent two months in Pakistan to learn the distinctive technique.
He said: “I want to take Pakistan Truck Art to a wider audience. Travelling in this van would expose the unique mobile canvas to people, making them smile.”
People can get involved with Hansel of Film by submitting a film, volunteering to become a runner and/or attending an event.
Tickets for the events are free but booking is strongly recommended with more information at http://hansel2012.org
