News / First of salmon cages towed in
THE FIRST of 12 salmon cages swept out to sea in the fierce Christmas Day storm was towed into Dales Voe, in Lerwick, late on Thursday, with no sight of salmon in it.
Managing director of Meridian Salmon Group Mark Warrington said that a second cage was due to be towed into Dales Voe later on Friday, while a spotter plane was in air to re-locate the remaining cages, 60 miles east of Shetland.
Mr Warrington said his salvage team hoped to make good progress this weekend as quieter weather than of late has been forecast.
“Our intention has always been to keep the cluster of cages together and try to bring them closer to Shetland. Hopefully the lull in the weather will make their recovery a little bit easier.
“The cage that arrived at Dales Voe is basically folded in half, still floating in the water, and tied to the pier. There is no fish in it,” he said.
