PRODUCTION of Atlantic salmon in Scottish waters has increased by 6.9 per cent in 2010 to 154,164 tonnes, the highest recorded production since 2004.
Shetland’s share in the salmon farming industry stands at just under 30 per cent with and output of 45,439 tonnes last year, according to statistics released by the Scottish government.
Nationally, the industry employed 1,064 people, of which 178 full time and 23 part time staff were working on Shetland salmon farms.
Productivity of local salmon farms were at 226 tonnes per worker significantly higher than on other Scottish fish farms.
