News / Co-op not closing
RENEWED rumours that the Lerwick Co-op was about to close were quickly dismissed by head office on Friday afternoon.
A spokesman for the supermarket chain said: “There are no plans for any store closures in Shetland.”
Last month, the company confirmed that the most northerly superstore in Lerwick was to shed 14 full time equivalent staff as part of a nationwide cost cutting measure.
It had been hoped that most of the job losses could be achieved through voluntary redundancies and natural wastage.
The spokesman added: “At present we’re still involved in discussions with staff.”
