News / Hall gets its turbine
A SHETLAND public hall committee is celebrating after winning its two year battle to erect a wind turbine to reduce its heating bills.
Burra public hall appealed against a decision by planning officials to refuse permission for a 15 kilowatt Proven P35-2 wind turbine to be sited close to the scenic Meal Beach on the grounds of visual impact.
The committee had already dropped an application for a larger turbine closer to the hall as it would be too noisy for neighbouring houses.
Shetland Islands Council’s planning board overturned the officials’ decision on Tuesday, though the hall will have to find a different type of turbine after Proven went out of business in September because of a defect discovered in the P35-2.
