News / Fetlar breakwater extension

PLANNERS in Shetland have agreed to a 40 metre extension to the new breakwater on the island of Fetlar, providing more protection for the local ferry and small boats which will be berthed at Hamar’s Ness.

The extension has been made possible after the contractor Frank L Johnston Ltd passed on savings made by sourcing rock locally for the £3.1 million project, which is expected to transform life on the island.

Islanders had feared that the original plan for a 230 metre breakwater would not provide sufficient protection all year round for vessels.

The breakwater is considered the key to the island’s future, which has suffered severe depopulation over the last few years.
