News / Cliff fall woman to be flown to Aberdeen

A 32 year old woman who was seriously injured after falling around 90 feet off cliffs in Shetland is to be flown to Aberdeen for treatment, according to local police.

Shetland coastguard were alerted at 5.40am on Monday that a woman was lying at the bottom of a geo in Stenness, at Eshaness, in the islands’ north mainland.

The coastguard sent in their local cliff rescue team and launched the Sumburgh-based rescue helicopter. Police officers, an ambulance crew and the local doctor also attended.

The cliff rescue team were unable to reach the woman, but the helicopter crew managed to lift her onto the land, despite windless conditions making it difficult to control the aircraft.

The woman was flown by helicopter to Lerwick where she was treated for serious injuries, though these are not thought to be life threatening. She is now to be sent to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.
