News / More than £750K from LEADER

SEVEN Shetland projects have been awarded more than three quarters of a million pounds from the European LEADER fund.

The largest sum of £200,000 has gone to Shetland Islands Council to cover 50 per cent of the cost of a grant scheme being run with Community Energy Scotland to help community groups improve the energy efficiency of their premises.

In Yell the Burravoe and District Development Group will receive £158,944 to pay for almost half of the cost of building a community and cultural centre.

Shetland College is to get £149,336 for half of their project to provide access to “innovative skills for employability” across Shetland’s rural areas and the Staney Hill area of Lerwick.

The SIC is creating a single card to access all council services, including the library, leisure facilities, school meals, buses and inter island ferries. LEADER is providing half the cost with £77,500.

The Moving On Employment Project is developing a transition support service for young people across Shetland with additional support needs or autistic spectrum conditions to help them move from full time education or benefits into training and employment. They receive £57,431, which is almost half the cost.

The SIC’s scheme to provide superfast broadband in Fetlar is receiving £50,000, half the cost of a 25MB backhaul network to Lerwick.

A further £30,000 will cover 50 per cent of a council grant scheme to help groups stage “new or additional events and festivals in Shetland”.

The Shetland Moving Image Archive Group get £27,555 to cover 45 per cent of the first phase of their project to set up a local moving image archive.

And Belmont Trust are being given £16,674 for 45 per cent of the cost of furnishing and equipping Belmont House in Unst as high quality self-catering accommodation, a tourist attraction and a venue for local events, and to set up a website to promote the venue and take on line bookings.
