News / Online box office goes live

AFTER months of waiting, Shetlanders are now able to buy their concert and theatre tickets online.
The online box office – www.shetlandboxoffice.org – is designed to remove barriers to buying tickets for Shetland events from across the isles and beyond.
Users can view up-coming events via a What’s On page that lists them chronologically.
Once users have registered they can buy tickets by credit or debit card and have them posted out or collect them from the venue or box office.
Shetland Arts has developed the service with Shetland Islands Council and finance from the Scottish government and hopes it will increase ticket sales for local events.
Experience elsewhere has shown that 40 per cent of all ticket sales go through the web after only six months.
Shetland Arts director Gwilym Gibbons said: “This latest phase of the Shetland Box Office marks a significant development in this partnership project.
“The option for Shetland customers to buy tickets online and browse what’s on information across many different promoters, venues and organisations is a great step forward.
“For visitors to Shetland it provides for the first time, information in one place that shows the vast offering of arts activity in Shetland, and best of all allows them to buy their tickets 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world.”

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.

Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.

Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has  over 600 supporters  who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.
