Ferryman heads for the mountains

YELL ferryman Ian Anderson was last night (Monday) on his way to the Nepalese mountain airport at Lukla to start his trek to the Mount Everest base camp.

The 43 year old is raising funds in aid of Cancer Link Aberdeen and North (Clan).

He is joined in the organised charity trip by Orkney man Donald Kirkpatrick who is raising money for the Macmillan cancer unit in Orkney.

The party has eight days to climb from a height of 2,860 metres (9,380 feet) to the Everest base camp at around 18,000 feet.

Donations for stroke group

Shetland Stroke Support Group (SSSG) was presented with three cheques during their monthly meeting at Market House, in Lerwick.

The first cheque was from Philomena Leask for £400, made up of a personal donation of £200, matched by Lerwick Fish Traders. Her sister Mary was a manager with LFT for 25 years before she suffered a stroke.

The second cheque for £75 was from June Ross-Smith following the funeral of her husband Stanley Ross-Smith who was an active member of the stroke group.

The final cheque for £615 was presented by Eric Peterson representing the family of the late George Peterson, who was also an active group member.
