News / Search resumes for missing canoeist
COASTGUARD teams have resumed the search for a missing canoeist who has not been seen for 48 hours.
The man, described as an experienced canoeist and aged between 40 and 50, was last seen when parking his car near the Bigton shop on Thursday morning, and taking his canoe to the beach at St Ninian’s Isle.
Coastguard teams, two lifeboats and the search and rescue helicopter were out searching all day yesterday (Friday) after the alarm was raised at around 9.25am.
Nothing was found and the search was stood down at darkness.
This morning (Saturday), four coastguard rescue teams and the Sumburgh based helicopter were out again, concentrating on the area between Sumburgh Head and Garths Ness.
The missing man is originally from New Zealand but has been living in Shetland for some years.
Anyone in the area who may have seen the missing man is asked to contact Shetland Coastguard or Lerwick police on 01595 69 2110.
