News / Search called off for missing canoeist
THE SEARCH for a missing canoeist has been called off two days after the man was seen carrying a red canoe to the St Ninian’s Isle beach, near Bigton.
Coastguard rescue teams, Shetland’s two lifeboats and the search and rescue helicopter searched the isles’ west coast since Thursday morning when the alarm was raised.
A spokesman for Shetland Coastguard said that the missing man’s “survivability” had long gone.
The experienced canoeist in his 40s was known to be a New Zealander who had lived in Shetland for many years.
This morning (Saturday), coastguard rescue teams and the Sumburgh based helicopter concentrated their efforts on an area between Sumburgh Head and Garths Ness.
Anyone in the area who may have seen the missing man is asked to contact Shetland Coastguard or Lerwick police on 01595 69 2110.
