News / Festival concert line-up announced
A STAR studded line up for the opening concert of this year’s Shetland Schools Music Festival will feature some of the islands’ top young musical acts.
On 7 March Lerwick Town Hall will play host to performances by internationally renowned fiddler Jenna Reid, singer Andy Ross, pianist Nigel Hayward and a vocal performance from the festival adjudicator Eric Tebbet, an acclaimed tenor in his own right.
Also playing that night will be junior musician of the year Sophie Wishart on fiddle and piano, and senior musician of the year, vocalist Erin Sandison.
They will be joined by school-based groups including Shetland Youth Jazz, Tunester, Qunitet + 1 and the Saturday Morning Music Club Strings.
Festival co-ordinator Davie Gardner said the intention was to launch this year’s festival with “a real musical bang”.
He said: “This particular concert will not only launch the festival itself…but also hopefully illustrate to everyone the sheer range, depth and quality of music currently being taught in, and performed throughout, Shetland’s schools.”
This year’s junior and senior ‘young musician of the year’ competition takes place on Wednesday 10 March in the town hall, while the festival gala concert will be on Thursday 11 March in the Clickimin Leisure Complex.
All events start at 7pm with doors opening at 6.30 each night. Tickets are priced £8 and £5 concession from Shetland Box Office at Islesburgh Community Centre or 01595 745555.
