Amazon agrees deal with Statkraft over Mossy Hill wind farm

BUSINESS giant Amazon has agreed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with developer Statkraft for the Mossy Hill wind farm on the outskirts of Lerwick.

Amazon has agreed to take the generation of 36MW of renewable electricity from the wind farm, which is expected to become operational in 2030.

The company said the agreement builds on its long-term investment in renewable energy projects in Scotland, and its wider carbon-free energy portfolio across the UK.

Located just outside Lerwick, Mossy Hill will be an eight turbine onshore wind farm – with the turbines expected to be delivered in 2029.

Amazon said it has now invested in more than 50 carbon-free energy projects across the UK, including wind farms and solar installations, representing more than 1 gigawatt (GW) of capacity.

It said this was “enough to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million households per year”.

The company’s UK and Ireland country manager John Boumphrey said the project in Shetland “builds on years of investment in renewable energy across the UK”.

“From the Shetland Islands to the coasts of England, our renewable energy investments are creating real jobs and powering local communities,” he said.

“Last year we announced our plan to invest £40 billion in the UK by 2027, and the transition to a lower-carbon economy is a part of how we’re putting that commitment to work.”

Statkraft’s UK and Ireland country manager Kevin O’Donovan said they were “pleased” to have signed a deal with Amazon.

The agreement gives Statkraft “the certainty to move the project forward,” he added.

“Shetland has a proud history of energy production, and as the country shifts towards more homegrown renewable power, we’re proud to be playing our part in that transition.”
