Business / Building owner seeking new tenant after Beggs blow

THE OWNER of the building hosting Beggs shoes shop says he is sad to see the company decide to close its Lerwick branch – but is keen to speak to anyone interested in becoming its new tenant.

Earlier this week national chain Beggs confirmed it would be closing its Lerwick branch in May due to staffing challenges.

The premises is owned by the Grand Hotel, which is located directly above.

The hotel’s Harvey Richmond said he is interested in hearing from anyone interested in renting the prominent Commercial Street premises from 1 June.

“We are sad that Beggs have informed us that they no longer want to rent the building due to staffing issues,” he said.

“The Beggs family have tried hard to rectify this situation and are in the unfortunate position that they have made the difficult decision to close a very successful store.

“We very much hoped that such a nice store would continue to rent the building for many years to come.”

Richmond said the building has a “prominent position, with very large storage facilities to the rear”.

He also said he was “delighted” to have bought the building, having previously purchased the former Bayes shop and the ex-Stage Door/Televiradio premises on either side as well.

Richmond said he was “fulfilling an ambition to amalgamate the shops with the hotel again for the first time since around 1937”.

The former Televiradio is now used for a hair/beauty studio, while it is understood the former Bayes shop has new tenants lined up.

Richmond also owns the Queens Hotel and The Lounge Bar.
