Community / Delting hop revellers given extra hour drinking up time

REVELLERS at the Delting Up Helly Aa hop will have an extra hour of drinking up time after an application to extend the Brae hall’s licensing hours were approved.

A brief meeting of the Shetland area licensing board today (Monday) gave the green light to extending the licensed hours of the Brae hall until 2am on Sunday 22 March.

While no drink will be sold during this time, the hall said the extra hour would allow punters to drink already purchased drinks and leave the hall throughout that time.

No objections were lodged by either the police or the licensing standards officer.

Shetland North councillor Andrew Hall – who led the Delting festival in 2018 – asked for the board to approve the application.

He called it a “very sensible approach” which had “gone on for years”, adding that the hop event was “well run”.

Board chairman Neil Pearson agreed, calling it a “well run event” and a “very sensible thing to do”.

Paul Ratter is set to lead the 2026 Delting festival as guizer jarl.
