News / Major step in Muckle Roe acquisition talks as consultant appointed
THE COMMUNITY of Muckle Roe have taken a step towards potentially purchasing the island from landowners.
The group have received funding through the Scottish Land Fund and Shetland Community Benefit Fund to appoint a community land purchase consultant.
The money marks an important stage in the process, and will allow the group to explore the feasibility of a community-led acquisition.
Extensive work has already been undertaken to engage with local residents about the prospect of buying Muckle Roe, with a range of engagement activities including public meetings in recent months.
The possibility of a community purchase of Muckle Roe was initially raised by the current landowners, Max and Sarah Ward, who opened discussions with the community.
The group said community land ownership could offer a range of long-term benefits for Muckle Roe, including the retention, protection and sensitive development of the island’s natural heritage and outstanding landscape, ensuring it is safeguarded for future generations.
The appointment of a consultant will allow the Muckle Roe community to ensure community voices remain central to the buy-out.
The consultant, Community Enterprise, will provide guidance and leadership, helping the community to make informed decisions at each stage.
A spokesperson for the group said they were delighted to secure the funding needed to progress to a formal consultation process.
“This funding will allow an independent consultant to work with the community of Muckle Roe to gather views and opinions on what a land purchase could look like,” they said.
“It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity for the community – one we would like to thank the current land owners for.
“We would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Scottish Land Fund and Lynsey Hall (SIC community involvement and development officer) for their invaluable support and guidance in getting to this point.”
The group said that further updates will be shared as the work progresses and more opportunities for community involvement arise.
