Election / Full list of elected community councillors after nominations close

There are more vacancies this time around compared to 2022 despite an advertising campaign

Brae

THE NUMBER of community council vacancies in Shetland has increased compared to the last time nominations were called for – despite an extensive advertising campaign.

Figures released by Shetland Islands Council on Thursday afternoon showed that 115 nominations were received, leaving 48 vacancies remaining.

In comparison, at the last elections in 2022 there were 38 vacancies left after nominations were submitted.

In recent weeks the SIC launched an advertising campaign encouraging people to stand for community councils, which included videos, social media ads and signs on the side of roads.

The only community council in the 2025 round of nominations with a full complement is Skerries, which has five members.

There are no contested seats, so there will be no votes at any ballot box.

People can still apply to be co-opted onto a community council, with folk advised to get in touch with the clerk of their local community council.

Some community councils came close to filling their complement, with Burra and Trondra, Fetlar and Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale left with only one vacancy each.
