Sport / Scottish Cup in town as part of islands tour
FOOTBALL’s famous Scottish Cup trophy is in Lerwick for the public to see today (Wednesday).
Current holders Aberdeen are taking the trophy on a tour of the country, with NorthLink taking it north on the boat last night.
The trophy is on show at the Clickimin Leisure Complex, in the foyer area beyond the reception, from 10am to 4pm.
People on board the NorthLink ferry to Lerwick last night were also given the chance to see the trophy up close outside the outside Magnus Lounge.
It is then set to head to Orkney tomorrow (Thursday).
The Scottish Cup is the oldest trophy in association football, which has been awarded since the 1870s.
Aberdeen won the cup in May for the first time in 35 years when they overcame Celtic on penalties at Hampden Park.
Aberdeen FC’s supporter experience manager Stephen McCormack said the trophy has already been on tour in the city and is set to go around the Highlands too.
“We have fans turn up the stadium from all over the UK, and especially north up in the islands and stuff like that,” he said.
“So it’s good for us to give them something on their doorstep, and reach out to them and let them come down and get a special moment.”
