THE ANNUAL Simmer Dim half-marathon had to be delayed on Sunday amid horrible weather conditions for runners.

A total of 119 hardy athletes tackled the 13.1 mile course from Cunningsburgh up to the Clickimin athletics track, with wind and rain an added obstacle for those taking part.

Michael Rimican from Irvine Running Club was the overall winner of the half marathon, racing across the finish line in a time of one hour, 20 minutes and 21 seconds.

Second was Ben Taylor in 1:21.47, and third was Russell Gair in a time of 1:22.29.

The women’s race was won this year by Rowan Burns in 1:36.25, with Shelley Humphray second in 1:43.41 and Lorna Wagstaff third across the line with a time of 1:44.52.

The event organisers thanked all the runners for taking part, saying that they were “fabulous on this tough route” and thanking them for their patience as they waited for road conditions to improve.

They also thanked event sponsors Cooke Scotland, the volunteers and marshals, Raynet, their lead cyclist and first aid cover, and the athletics club for providing the teas and food.

THERE will be an-all Shetland tie for a place in the quarter-finals of the Highland Amateur Cup on Friday night.

Scalloway will host Whalsay at Fraser Park for a spot in the last eight of the prestigious cup competition after thrashing Stornoway United 8-1 on Saturday.

The villagers travelled down to Culbokie for the re-arranged fixture, and comprehensively earned a place in the last 16 as a young team put aside the setback of being pegged back during the game to eventually run out comfortable winners.

Four goals from John Allan, a double from Jack Fitzsimmons, and goals from Bobby Robertson and Jamie Leishman sealed Scalloway’s place in the next round.

Next up for them is a familiar foe in Whalsay, with the pair facing off for the chance to play Inver FC in the quarter-finals on 2 August.

While the rest of the quarter-finals kick-off on 12 July, teams from Orkney and Shetland have been given an extra three weeks to fulfil their fixtures due to the Island Games.

Lerwick Spurs run in the competition came to an end on Saturday, with the milkbags losing out 2-1 to Maryburgh at Stromness in Orkney.

Maryburgh took the lead in the first half, and though Lewis Harkness equalised from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time a goal for Maryburgh 15 minutes from time was enough to knock Spurs out.

The sides return to league action tonight (Monday), with Spurs travelling to the West Side to take on Whitedale at Strom.

Celtic host Ness at Gilbertson Park, while Thistle will make the short trip to Fraser Park to play Scalloway.

The next cup final of the season takes place on Saturday, with Celtic and Ness meeting for the second time in a week at the Gilbertson Park in the Jewson Madrid Cup final, with a 3pm kick-off.

FORMER Scalloway forward George Robesten has signed a new one-year contract with Ross County.

The club said it was “delighted” to tie Robesten down for another season, ahead of the Staggies’ first campaign in the Scottish Championship for seven years.

Robesten made his Premiership debut for the club last year after returning from a loan spell at Brora Rangers, coming off the bench against Dundee United before starting against Hibs in the next game.

Ross County will start their league campaign away to Airdrieonians on 2 August, before hosting fellow relegated side St. Johnstone a week later.

ROSEBOWL winners Spurs started their Dowry Grutness cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Masters on Thursday night.

Their challengers for the Rosebowl title, Burra, got their Grutness trophy bid with a victory – albeit a very close one, beating Zetland 3-2 in Brae.

Meanwhile Shetland Hockey has paid tribute to local umpire Sarah Couper, who has been away umpiring at the European Masters Championships in Valencia.

Couper will be involved in clashes between Germany and Wales, Holland and Germany, and Scotland against Wales.

Shetland Hockey said players in the isles were “very lucky to have officials who are just as committed to the game as the players”.

ON SATURDAY bowlers played for the Mundie Midsummer Cup, where players play three six-end sets with the rinks and initial playing positions drawn out of a hat.

After the first end, the playing positions then change every end. Points are awarded for the three bowls nearest the jack and the player with the highest score after three ends wins the cup.

Mike Bailey was out in front after the first set on 18 points, but he had a poor second set and let Alex Elphinstone shoot into the lead on 25 points.

However at the end of the third set it was Anne Robertson who had overtaken everyone, finishing on a total of 34 points, with Bailey on 32 and Elphinstone on 31.

She received the Mundie Midsummer cup from Lerwick Outdoor Bowling Club president Bob Brandie.

ALEXIS Odie was the winner of this year’s golf Jewson Open at Dale on Saturday, with the biggest field of the year taking part in the event.

A total of 82 golfers teed off at Shetland Golf Club at the weekend for the competition, with Odie seeing off the rest of the pack to lift the trophy.
