Transport / More 20mph limits could be proposed

THE ROLL-OUT of more 20mph speed limits in Shetland could expand to rural areas next year.

A report due to be presented to councillors next week mentions that parts of Virkie, Boddam, Voe, Firth, Mossbank and Baltasound could be considered for lower limits.

These are at Hestingott, Dalsetter Wynd, Hoswick, Mulla, Sandside/Midlea/Leaside, Smuggabank/Hamarsgarth and Setter’s Hill.

The report, due to presented to the environment and transport committee on Monday, said the roll-out is in line with the Scottish Government’s goal that “all appropriate roads in built up areas will have a safer speed limit of 20mph by 2025”.

Plans have already been proposed to introduce 20mph limits in parts of Lerwick and Scalloway.

The report said the consensus from consultation in Lerwick is in favour of the proposals.

Traffic orders are being drafted and formal consultation will commence on 29 November.

Plans to introduce 20mph limits in Scalloway are less advanced, with a public meeting only held in the village earlier this month.
