Community / Delting jarl squad’s 20 tonne fundraiser

Delting Up Helly Aa guizer jarl Dwayne Davies.

THE DELTING Up Helly Aa jarl squad is planning to lift 20 tonnes between them to raise money for charity.

Funds raised from the event – due to take place on the Delting Up Helly Aa day itself on 17 March – will go to Mind Your Head and the Little Princess Trust.

The plan is to have three bars set up with different weights, and each squad member will chose what they want to lift – and how many times.

The goal is to cumulatively lift a total of 20 tonnes between them.

The event marks 20 years since the passing of Delting guizer jarl Dwayne Davies’ late uncle, Karl Johnson.

The symbolism is that each tonne will represent each year since his passing.

The squad will also be supporting the Little Princess Trust, including through hair donations. The charity provides free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Davies will be shaving his eight-year hair growth at the Voe Show in August, while other squad members will “brave the shave” on Sunday 19 March.

People can donate to the fundraiser here.
