A FRENCH yachtswoman suffering from a suspected broken arm has been airlifted to hospital in Shetland.

The NorthLink ferry, on her way from Lerwick to Kirkwall, played a vital part in the rescue south of Fair Isles on Friday evening.

After picking up a distress signal from the French yacht Francois Marine, the crew of the Hrossey alerted Shetland Coastguard and also provided essential communication with the two people on board the 10 metre yacht.

The ferry’s rescue craft then escorted the yacht into harbour on Fair Isle from where she was airlifted by the Sumburgh based Coastguard helicopter.
