Letters / A great big thank you
On behalf of all at Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary, we would like to send out a great big thank you to everyone who has supported our fundraising appeal over the last four months and helped us reach our target of 500 pledges of £5 a month to help secure the sanctuary’s long term future.
It has been an extraordinary summer and we have been quite overwhelmed by all the support that people have shown for the work we do rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing seals and otters back into the wild.
We would also like to give a special thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate our 30th anniversary at Sound public hall on 1 September, especially Jolene and Michael Leftwich, Kathy Pitt, Anne Barron and Richard and Alison Riley for all their help and support.
We managed to raise £2,005 on the night, mostly through an auction of paintings and photographs kindly donated by some extremely talented artists and photographers. We were given 15 images and sold every single one.
We shall now be working with Shetland Islands Council and the Sullom Voe Association on the £400,000 development plan for the sanctuary to make sure that the work we do can continue long into the future.

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.
Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.
Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has over 600 supporters who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.
Your contribution will ensure Shetland News can: -
- Bring you the headlines as they happen;
- Stay editorially independent;
- Give a voice to the community;
- Grow site traffic further;
- Research and publish more in-depth news, including more Shetland Lives features.
