News / Airport emergency

A HELICOPTER operated by Babcock with 12 people on board landed safely at Sumburgh Airport on Wednesday after it had to abandon its first attempt to touch down.

Shetland Coastguard tasked the Lerwick lifeboat and its voluntary rescue teams after being alerted to the incident just before midday. However, they were stood down again within minutes.

The coastguard search and rescue helicopter, out on a training exercise at the time, hovered in the vicinity until the aircraft had landed safely.
